ELYSSA’S MISSION ANNOUNCES LOYOLA ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP
Announcement Highlights Need for Teens to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell)

Wilmette, Illinois (January 11, 2011) – Elyssa’s Mission, a local foundation that provides resources to support at-risk teens and prevent suicide, announced today the creation of the Elyssa’s Mission Scholarship Award Program. The Scholarship was created to further the group’s efforts to prevent teen suicide and motivates college-bound students to raise awareness of the signs of suicide and incorporate the ACT message (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell). Loyola Academy was chosen as the first recipient of the Elyssa’s Mission Scholarship Award Program because of their commitment to educating their students on the warning signs of suicide, depression and substance abuse.

Loyola currently teaches sophomores the warning signs of suicide prevention using the SOS Signs of Suicide® program, an evidence-based program written by mental health professionals, funded and distributed by Elyssa’s Mission. In addition to teaching sophomores the warning signs of suicide through the SOS program, Loyola utilizes the SOS Booster Program designed specifically for seniors. All Loyola seniors participate in this program, thereby receiving a review of the warning signs of depression and suicide, while also learning how to prepare for life beyond high school. The Booster Program places an added emphasis on treatment, encouraging teens to seek mental health support on behalf of themselves or a friend if they are struggling. The SOS high school program is the only school-based suicide prevention program listed on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices that addresses suicide risk and depression, while reducing suicide attempts.

The scholarship will be offered to Loyola Academy seniors who have completed the Signs of Suicide Program. Seniors are asked to write an essay incorporating the Signs of Suicide program message. Elyssa’s Mission is looking to recognize students whom understand the role a friend has to take to help save a life. The Winner(s) will be announced at the Loyola Academy Honors Convocation Ceremony on May 15, 2012.
